Portraits from KC, MO 7/21/09
Portraits from KC, MO 7/21/09
While I was visiting my family in Kansas City, Able and I celebrated the 4th of July with a cookout at our friend's house. The light was soft in the early evening as I made these portraits. I was drawn to the repeating lines and patterns from the siding on the house and on our friend's clothing.

30 Portraits for a 30th Birthday 6/17/09
Today is my husband's 30th Birthday. As a photographer, I have been making portraits of him for 9 years now. I began photographing him for portrait assignments my freshman year at art school, and now as a professional, I continue to make many pictures of him each year. This collection of portraits has been created over 9 years using many different cameras including: a quadcam, my old Minolta, Spectra Polariod, Cannon AE1, and my Hasselblad.

Portraits 5/03/09
I've been so busy lately my days feel like they are flying past me. I can't believe that it's already May and 90 degrees outside! When I'm not shooting commercially, I'm finding that I am seeking out the quiet peaceful moments that I'm longing for in my personal work.

Easter Weekend in the Mountains 4/19/09
Easter Weekend in the Mountains 4/19/09
When I’m in the mountains, time slows down. I can see color more clearly, enjoy the flavors of Beka’s cooking more sensitively, hear the birds exchanging different songs, and most importantly, be still.

Drawings from Recent Solo Show 3/24/09
Last month I showed a series of drawings at Morning Times Gallery in Raleigh, NC. The drawings are meditations on different characteristics of music using gauche, ink, charcoal, fabric and marker on layered translucent paper. I explore different ways mark making can mimic musical notation and convey varying degrees of energy and volume.

Kansas City Series Cont. 3/09/09
Last month I was back in Kansas City visiting my ailing Grandfather. I found myself with an entire afternoon that I could focus on this series. These are some photos from a cold afternoon shooting in the West Bottoms and off of Linwood.

McKinney Interiors 1/12/09
McKinney Interiors 1/12/09
This fall I continued working on the interior photography for McKinney Advertising Agency where I currently work as the agency photographer. The space of the agency was converted from an old 1800’s tobacco warehouse in downtown Durham, NC. The large beams from the warehouse are exposed and add to the texture and color of the open and creative space. The working spaces at McKinney reflect a hybrid of the laid back south and the good design philosophy of a nationally recognized ad agency.

Kansas City Series 1/03/09
Kansas City Series 1/03/09
Each time I visit Kansas City I find my Grandparents in different states of flux while dealing with their declining health issues. When I am back I find myself mentally preparing that they might not be alive or well the next time I see them, so I savor each moment that I have. For couple of years all four of my Grandparent’s health has begun to decline more rapidly, and each time I am home, I have found myself walking around the city taking pictures to process and cope with a large range of emotions.

Back to Providence 12/06/08
Last week over Thanksgiving break my husband and I spent an afternoon visiting Providence, Rhode Island where my we studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. When I think of Providence, there are many things that I miss and can't recreate anywhere else. I miss the foggy mornings and cobblestone streets, the salty smell of the ocean, the old historic homes, my friends and of course, favorite cafes.

Here are a few recent photographs of Toots and Magoo's lovely product. I focused on utilizing natural light to accentuate the bold colors of the objects and make the photographs sing.

Toots and Magoo 08/02/08
It is always fun to shoot products that I personally find exciting and beautiful, and shooting for Toots and Magoo has been no exception. Not only do I love their bags, jewelry, paper products and antiques, they are also fair trade and sell work fromrom international artists and designers.

Carrboro Crepes 07/19/08
Carrboro Crepes 07/19/08
A delicious Crepe cart has quickly gotten my attention and taste buds excited in Carrboro. A few Saturdays back while I was driving around looking for yard sales I continued seeing white signs with thick pink lettering reading "Crepes Today." I followed the signs to Johnny's on West Main Street and I was not disappointed.

Summer in the Mountains 07/06/08
When I wake up in the Smoky Mountains birds are always chirping in a chorus that fills the foggy morning air. It doesn't matter if I'm camping or staying with my good friend Rebecca, long weekends in the mountains have became my respite and place to get creatively recharged.

Train Series 06/23/08
Train Series 06/23/08
For the past 3 years I have been working on a series of landscapes centered on the industrial train yards of the U.S. For over 50 years the men of my family have worked on trains. Growing up I lived on a cul-de-sac with train tracks at the end. Every night I lay in bed listening to the rhythm of the train engine and shrill whistle while trying to fall asleep. It has become part of my thoughts and memories of home and family.

D.C. Excursion 05/4/08
D.C. Excursion 05/4/08
My old shoes barely made it through the weekend when I visited Washington D.C. for the first time a few weeks ago. I am not an amateur when it comes to walking in the city. I understand the subtle nuances of packing versatile fashionable shoes with good arch support and plenty of breathing room, but this time my flimsy Polo kicks didn't make the mark. I had shin splints within the first 4 hours, and swollen feet by the end of the long weekend.

Flea Market 04/2/08
I'll admit, I went to the Raleigh Flea Market with high expectations secretly hoping to relive my experiences of the markets in India. I wanted the color of fabrics hanging from tents, the textures of old books and pottery, and the smell of fresh Naan baking in an oven.

New Spring Photos 03/30/08
Lately, the light in North Carolina has been even, filtered by the clouds. On most rainy days the light has a blue wash over the green of the trees, the blooming branches and cement roads. It reminds me of the light in New England that often made the color in my photos more saturated and punchy.

R.I.P. Poloroid 02/24/08
The first 15 years of my life have been documented with a Polaroid Camera. My Grandpa loved having his camera within reach, ready to capture his grandchildren blowing out the candles of their Birthday cake, opening Christmas gifts, or being silly at family picnics. If I were lucky, my Grandpa would let me take a few pictures. Mesmerized, I watched the image I photographed come to life, deepen in contrast, and pop.
