Kansas City Series 01/03/09

Each time I visit Kansas City I find my Grandparents in different states of flux while dealing with their declining health issues. When I am back I find myself mentally preparing that they might not be alive or well the next time I see them, so I savor each moment that I have. For couple of years all four of my Grandparent’s health has begun to decline more rapidly, and each time I am home, I have found myself walking around the city taking pictures to process and cope with a large range of emotions.

These photographs are part of a series that have formed over the span of 4 years and continues to grow. I personify the architecture and signage specific to my childhood and memories in Kansas City, and visually explore the themes of aging, decay, death and the afterlife.  I have specifically chosen to shoot these photographs with my medium format camera using black and white film and presenting them in a white matte and black frame to reference the 20th Century.
This series is still a work in progress, so please stay tuned for upcoming gallery show dates in 2009.

Currently, 3 prints from this series are in a Black and White Group Show at Morning Times Gallery in Raleigh for the month of January! Please check out the show and let me know what you think.
